Principal's Report

Published by Blackwater State High School

This is our final newsletter for Term 2. After today we have two more days of school before the holidays. Remember that students are required to attend up to and including the last day of term on June 29 – “Every Day Counts!”

I think our students and teachers have used the extra week of this 11-week term to maximum benefit. It is amazing how this small change affects how we feel and how much we achieve. Well done to everyone. When we return, we start Semester 2, so I am encouraging our staff and students to make the most of a re-energising holiday.  I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their efforts and dedication through the first half of the year. I have really enjoyed working with the school community to make Blackwater State High School a great place to be for our students.

Facility Developments

In a school of our age, one of the biggest challenges is maintaining quality facilities for our staff and students in order to facilitate the best learning environment for student achievement. As our school continues to grow, facility developments continue to roll forward.  Our school will see over $1.2 million in capital works investment within the 2018 calendar year.

We are extremely excited to see the work on our new multipurpose sports complex commence. The old courts have been removed, and the concrete has been poured for the three new courts which will house the following sports: tennis, netball, volleyball and basketball.  It has been and will continue to be a hive of activity until the completion of the courts.

A second facilities project will begin on the 2nd July at Blackwater State High School. The Drainage Rectification Project will see various works roll out over the next 4 months which will allow all year round access to buildings and grounds, enhancing the learning opportunities for students – without any excess water build up.

Lastly, the F06 computer lab has received a $25 000 upgrade for ultimate performance. It has been fitted with a fleet of brand new, state-of-the-art desktops, which will power the success of our students.

As the term comes to an end, I would like to take the time to thank and acknowledge the work of some of our teachers that are leaving Blackwater State High and to celebrate the appointment of permanent positions within our leadership team. Jerry Cakau, Neil Bryant and Sandra Worrall will finish their contracts at the end of this term.  We thank them for their work within our learning community.  Our replacement teachers will be announced at the start of Term 3.  To ensure we create the best learning environment for all of our students we were able to appoint an additional Deputy Principal, which has been filled for the remainder of 2018 by Mrs Terri Weatherley. Our permanent head of department positions were also filled - Head of Department Junior Secondary: Jackson Mackay and Head of Department Teaching and Learning: Sarah Cobb. As a learning community, we welcome the stability that these roles will bring to our team.

The last week of the term is always an important time for our learning community as we are finalising student assessment, determining achievement levels and beginning new work. Each and every student should be able to tell you what they are learning or have learnt this term, what they need to do to be successful now and in the future, what feedback they have received to improve their work, what they still need to fix up and finally where they can go for help when they need it. I have been very impressed with the work being produced in each and every classroom. I can’t wait to read our students report cards to see how everyone is progressing.

Term 2 will end in a spectacular fashion as we hold our Athletics Carnival. These days are wonderful days at school. It’s great to see the students engaged in competition and house spirit and it’s very enjoyable to catch up with so many parents and families that make the effort to come and support their children. Everyone have been working very hard to make this carnival a huge success.

The range of opportunities that our staff provide for our students never ceases to amaze me, and the dedication and talent demonstrated by our students when they embrace these opportunities never ceases to inspire! Another example of exceptional initiative for learning innovation at Blackwater State High School was demonstrated and supported by our successful application to the 2018 Smart Giving Schools Round: this grant process is open to all schools within Australia including state, private and independent. The assessors saw great merit in our school strategy to create change for our Blackwater school community. We will receive $28 800 to implement our project.  The project will use our writing explicit improvement agenda as a platform and map out the building of cognitive skills across Years 7-12, allowing the reduction of scaffolding as students’ progress, producing independent learners who will experience success, not only in the new senior system, but in their future employment.

Our school holidays start on Saturday, June 30th and students return on Monday, July 16th. Please keep an eye on our school over the holidays and should you see anything suspicious please phone School Watch on 13 17 88.

I wish all of our students a refreshing and relaxing break, ready to return recharged for Semester 2.

Please ensure you have a safe and enjoyable holiday, and be sure to make the most of the opportunity to spend time relaxing with family and friends.

Mrs Rebecca Godfrey

What another wonderful term at Blackwater State High School! The highlight of the term for me was the 42nd Annual P&C Art Show and Competition. Every year I am amazed at the talent that we have in our local area, and from the artists that support us from near and far. In particular, it is wonderful to see the talents of our own students who entered their art work. In addition the hospitality students did a great job catering at the event. Term 2 has been a long term of 11 weeks and I hope students and families have a fun and safe holiday, where they get the chance to take a break and refresh. We look forward to seeing you all back on 16 July for Semester 2.

Report Cards and Parent Teacher Interviews

The Semester 1 report cards will be distributed during Week 1 of next term. Parent Teacher Interviews will then follow on 1 August. We will be doing our usual booking of interviews through SOBS. We look forward to seeing you all at this event so we can discuss how to best support your child together in their learning.

Police Cyber-Safety Talks

On Thursday, all students will have a session with our Adopt-a-Cops who are coming to talk to them about Cyber-Safety and Cyber-Bullying. With the large usage of social media by teenagers, it is important that they are fully aware of the dangers and the social and legal consequences of their actions online.

The New QCE

I have spent a lot of time this term preparing for the changes to senior schooling, beginning for Year 11s in 2019. It is important that all students in Year 10 and below, and their parents, understand the changes that are coming. We have already held one parent information evening outlining what the main changes are. During Term 3 there will be a number of additional information evenings and other events designed to support you and your child during this change. I encourage all of you to attend these events, so that you are fully prepared and can support your child through these changes. We have added a new section to our school website called The New QCE where we will upload important documents and information regarding the senior system from 2019. Feel free to take a look at the information provided there. If you have any further questions, please contact the school office to book a time to discuss how we can best support your child to reach their full potential.

Every Day Counts

Education QLD requires all students to attend school every day. If you have missed an assessment, ensure you catch up with your teacher as soon as you return.

Mrs Terri Weatherley

Welcome

Term Two has nearly come to an end and I have spent a wonderful five weeks in the position of Junior Deputy Principal. My name is Terri Weatherley and I have been teaching in Central Queensland for the past 23 years and I have had the opportunity to teach students in both Primary and High school. I am very passionate about supporting staff with their teaching pedagogy and improving the opportunity for all students to become engaged learners.

Blackwater State High School staff and students have provided me with a warm welcome and I am looking forward to meeting parents/carers throughout the remainder of the year.

Writing - In the past month I have had the opportunity to witness some fantastic teaching practices occurring in all curriculum areas throughout the Junior School. Students have been writing detailed paragraphs using cohesive devices to create detailed sentences. Year 7 students have commenced writing memoirs and are using effective language features to make their memoirs more descriptive and interesting to read. Positive postcards have been sent home in the past week to celebrate the wonderful achievements that students of all abilities are having with their writing.

Personal devices and ICT use - Please ensure that your child/children are not bringing their personal devices to school. There have been a number of cases where the security of our network has been jeopardised due to some students accessing our intranet with their personal devices. A number of ICT breaches have resulted in students being banned from having access to our ICT resources.

It is vital that students protect themselves by ensuring that they keep their log on password details safe and secure and they do not share their private passwords with their peers. Students are also reminded to ensure that their computer is not left unattended while they are logged into the network and to log off after they are finished using a computer.

Members of the Blackwater Police will deliver an informative talk to our students on Thursday in regards to Cyber safety.

Transition Program - Year 6 students enrolling in 2019.

Throughout Terms 3 and 4, current Year 6 students from our feeder Primary schools will have an opportunity to attend Transition days and Information Sessions to enable them to have a smooth transition into High School. Staff from Blackwater State High School will be visiting various Primary schools early next term to deliver enrolment and scholarship applications and to discuss the fantastic opportunities that our school will offer next year. Key Transition program dates have been included in this newsletter for your perusal.

Aspiring Junior Leaders Camp

This year, students in Years 7, 8 and 9 who have been identified as ‘aspiring’ future leaders will be invited to apply for a position to attend the ‘Aspiring Junior Leaders Camp’ which will be held in  Term 3, Week 10 at North Keppel Island.

Students applying for a position to attend will need to meet a specific criteria which focusses on behaviour, effort and attendance. A letter will be distributed to those students who meet the criteria. They will then have an opportunity to complete an application and apply for a position  to attend the camp.

The end of term is fast approaching which means Semester 1 reports will be sent home soon. Ensure that you take this opportunity to look at the comments and talk with your children about how far forward they have moved, ask them what they have learned and what is the next step in their learning. This conversation sets them up to be successful learners for the beginning of Semester 2 and also reminds the students that you are interested in what is going on at school not just academically. Report cards also provide a perfect opportunity where you can reflect and think about what practical support you can offer your child as a parent/career for further growth in Semester 2 such as listening to their oral presentations prior to them presenting in class, looking over their assignments and checking homework.

Homework will be a focus area throughout Semester 2 ensuring that our Junior School students are best prepared for the new senior curriculum. Homework is known to provide students with opportunities to consolidate their classroom learning.

General Principles

Homework is most effective when it:

  • is clearly related to class work
  • is appropriate to particular years of schooling
  •  is varied and differentiated to individual learning needs
  • consolidates, revises and/or applies students’ classroom learning
  • develops students’ independence as a learner through extension activities such as investigating, researching, writing, designing, making
  • assists students to prepare for upcoming classroom learning, such as collecting relevant materials and information, completing surveys and audits

As a school we recognise that there is a need for students in our complex and busy world to have a balanced lifestyle and to have time to take part in activities with parents and friends and to develop interests in other areas, therefore homework in Year 7 and Year 8 could be up to but generally not more than 5 hours per week. In Year 9 students are given more responsibility for their own learning as they progress towards becoming senior students and as such can be expected to have 5 hours plus additional individual requirements.

Year 7 & 8 Year Level Update

Published by Blackwater State High School

We have done it! Congratulations to all students for completing assessment for the term. I know you are all looking forward to your report cards. When you read your reports, please do so carefully, and pay special attention to ways for you to improve. You should be proactive and seek out help from your teachers early next term in order to set some goals and look to become the best student you can be. Even if you only focus on something small, it is extremely important for us to make realistic goals.

It is also important that we reflect on the successes that we have had throughout the year. Many of us have made new friendships which is a big part of high school. A big focus for the school going into Term 3 will be about being respectful to one another, and especially to people who need a bit of a pick up. You may not be friends with everyone at the school, but you need to treat one another with respect.

Have a safe, fun and refreshing holiday. I can’t wait to see you all in July!

Term Two Wrap Up

This term has certainly flown by, culminating in Year 10, 11 and 12 students sitting block exams in Week 10. We continue to encourage our students to make the most of their opportunities and to do their best at all times. Earlier in the term, a parent information evening was held to let people know about the significant changes coming up as the new senior system is rolled out in Queensland. It was a great evening and lots of questions were asked. Thank you to all of you who attended.

The New QCE - How will Year 11 be different next year?

Year 11 in Queensland is changing to help give students the skills for success in work and life in the future. These changes will only affect current Year 10 students (not our Year 11s who will remain on the old system). These are some of the main changes:

  • The OP system we currently have for students to apply for university will be changed. The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) which is common across Australia will replace it. For more details and short video explanations click here
  •  Students will sit external exams for subjects at the end of Year 12 (2020). These will either be 25% or 50% of their final mark.  There will still be school run assessment in Year 11 and 12 but there will be fewer of these than the current system.
  • The QCS (Queensland Core Skills) test that Year 12 students currently do, will not happen.

If you would like some more detail on the new QCE click here

We are in the process of updating our subject selection handbook. It will be made available in the next newsletter.

3 Things parents need to know about the new QCE

  1. The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is Queensland’s senior secondary schooling qualification that students undertake in Year 11 and 12.  To earn a QCE students must study and successfully complete a set number of subjects that meet all the requirements of the QCE. This becomes their pathway to successful employment or further study when they leave school.
  2. Choosing a QCE pathway for Year 11 and 12 is one of the most important things a student does in their schooling. If parents take an active interest in the process their children will tend to make better decisions.
  3. For the current Year 10 students and beyond the QCE is changing. To understand these changes the following events have been scheduled:
  • Parent information night – 25th July 2018
  • Career Expo for Years 10 – 12 on Tuesday 7th August 2018
  • Subject Selection information – Wednesday 8th August 2018
  • Year 10 Set Planning day – Wednesday 22nd August

Further details will be made available closer to the time.

I wish you all a restful and happy break. I’ll see you next term.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

Published by Blackwater State High School

Blackwater State High School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) school.  We have a PB4L team that works behind the scenes to ensure that all teachers support the positive behaviours of our students and that community members are aware of our positive approach to student learning.  We do this through emphasis on our four core values of Respect, Responsibility, Safety and Effort across all settings and contexts within our school.

Our focus for this year aligns with our whole school priorities of attendance and student engagement. Each week all staff teach PBL lessons to every student in the school so that we have a consistent message that is targeted for the specific needs of the school at that time.  As a school we have focused on being respectful to others and self by ensuring classrooms are learning spaces for everyone, following staff instructions, being prompt to class, and being ready on time and prepared for learning.  Each of these focuses have been delivered to students in extended form on Monday, as well as on both full school and year level parades.

Our action plan for 2018 is to review the Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students, this will include forums for parent feedback via the P&C and online surveys, students also have the opportunity to provide feedback through the student council and student surveys.  Another of our goals for 2018 is to renew our visible reminders of the four school values around the school.  We also aim to communicate more regularly and visibly with our community through our Facebook page, the school sign and the newsletter about our weekly focuses and various activities that promote the positive culture in our school.

School fees

Outstanding invoices were posted out a few weeks ago. Thank you to all families who have paid all their fees and to those who have an agreed payment plan in place and are actively paying. As previously stated in newsletters, invoices are required to be paid by 30 days, so invoices are now currently 90+ days overdue. Our preferred method of payment is Bpoint or calling into the office. The Department no longer accepts payment via phone calls.  Failing to pay fees can result in the school engaging debt collectors.

Please be aware that non-payment of fees may exclude students from any school activity or purchase not associated with academic assessment including (for example, but not limited to) excursions, camp, sports representations, ID cards and formal.

42nd Annual Art Competition & Exhibition

Published by Blackwater State High School

The Blackwater State High School Art Show, which is a much anticipated cultural and social community event in Blackwater, was held on the 25th - 27th May. The event was run by the Blackwater State High School P&C committee to raise much needed funds for our school.

We love the way the Blackwater community continues to support this event. Friday night, the opening night, when the prize winners were announced, was the highlight of the Exhibition. It is a popular social evening which was once again well attended, with this year’s judge being Jenni Kelly. Throughout the evening Blackwater State High School Hospitality students served a variey of delicous canapes for patrons to enjoy, while local musicians and staff members, Paul Stephenson and Lacee Rawle, provided excellent musical entertainment which the crowd thoroughly enjoyed.

We are extremely proud of the longevity of the exhibition, now in its 42nd year, which is due to the calibre of artworks displayed and the fine food, wine and entertainment. We wish to thank the many artists who entered their works in the competition and the major sponsors of this event for without them we would be unable to continue the Art Show tradition.

Year 11 & 12 Hospitality Practices

On the 25th of May, Year 11 and 12 students studying Hospitality Practices participated in an all day food preparation and evening service, working towards completing their Term 2 assessment task.  During the term students have been tasked with researching recipes and trialling a range of different canape options.  As a class we negotiated a menu to prepare, cook and serve to the guests at the Art Show.  During the preparation of the food for the Art Show, students were broken up into small groups, each group in charge of preparing one of the canapes that were on the menu.  During the evening service, our Year 12 students stepped up as the chefs and Year 11 students worked in pairs offering the canapes to the guests in attendance at the Art Show.  All of the students who were present during the Art Show event worked incredibly hard, and definitely made our school proud.

The Count Down Begins... 12 weeks to go!

On September 19 this year,  eleven Blackwater State High School students will be travelling to the United States of America to attend Space Camp.

Space camp is a program to promote the study of science, technology, engineering and math and is fully endorsed by NASA. Students participate in a rigorous program that teaches them about the mental, emotional and physical demands astronauts face and provides leadership training as well as learning the importance of teamwork. Students are guided through the past, present and future of space exploration.

As well as attending Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, students will be undertaking a number of STEM activities in Orlando, Florida and San Diego, California.

To keep the costs of the camp to a minimum for participating families, we have undertaken an extensive fundraising effort over the past year with a variety of events that include: Cleaning up after the BMA 50 Year Anniversary Celebration, assisted the Blackwater Rodeo and Speedway clubs with their events as well as the recent Bluff Race meeting, May Day Fair Show bag and lolly stalls,  many sausage sizzles and a very successful Multi Draw Raffle to name just a few. During Term 3 students will be selling raffle tickets for our 2nd Multi Draw Raffle (tickets will be available from students or from the school), holding a pie drive with delivery in mid August, another Sausage sizzle at the Family Science Night which will be held here at the school on August 16 and families will be assisting the Dingo Race Club with their upcoming race meeting at the end of August.

Our students are excited to be touring the United States in 12 weeks time, they deserve this once in a lifetime educational opportunity that they are working so hard for!

Trespassing on School Grounds

Published by Blackwater State High School

Being on school property out of school hours without permission constitutes trespassing

It is an offence to be on state school premises without a lawful authority or a reasonable excuse for being there. A current maximum fine of $2523 applies, section 334 Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Qld) (Education Act).

This means that school grounds (such as the playing fields) are not available for general use out of school hours without permission, even just walking through school grounds as a shortcut.

Police keep schools under surveillance out of hours and are keen to apprehend trespassers in an attempt to reduce vandalism and wilful damage of school property.

Parents are asked to emphasise the above with students so that they do not enter school grounds after school, at weekends or during school holidays.

Our school is a part of the School Watch program.  If you see anything suspicious occurring in the school after hours, please phone School Watch on 13 17 88.

Young people invited to be engaged

Young people invited to be engaged

Central Highlands Regional Council wants young people to be a part of the community engagement process and one way to do that is by joining a community reference group (CRG).

Mayor Cr Kerry Hayes said that young people are a vital part of the community now and in the future.

‘We have many passionate and engaged young people that work with council to bring to life youth events and tell us what young people in the Central Highlands need and want,’ he said.

‘The fine ideas we recently heard at the Mayoral Student Leader Summit are just one proof that young people have valuable opinions, voices and ideas that we’d like to hear.

‘We hope to inspire young people to become a part of council’s community engagement processes and learn about their community and council.’

By joining a CRG young people can find out what’s happening in their community, learn about what council does and the people that work in council, hear about council’s latest projects and have a say about what’s important to them.

There are thirteen CRG’s in the region that meet regularly to work together with community, government, business and industry to partner in advancing initiatives and have a say in the communities’ long-term future.
