Principal's Report
Published by Blackwater State High SchoolThe hectic pace of our school continues with the end of Term 3 upon us. It has been another great term with student achievement again demonstrating that Blackwater State High is leading the way for a holistic approach to learning. The range of activities across the school this term sees our students and staff looking forward to a well-earned Spring Vacation. This term has seen our senior students fast approaching the final weeks of their schooling. At the other end of their Blackwater State High journey, our prospective Year 7 families have completed their information sessions and new enrolments are being completed in readiness for interviews and transition. Congratulations on another successful term; enjoy this edition of our newsletter and have a safe and relaxing Spring Vacation.
I am also proud of the way our parents are becoming increasingly involved in our school. We want Blackwater State High School to be welcoming to all parents and carers and I thank those parents who assist in allowing these key learnings to occur. Whether it is through driving students to training or competitions, supporting staff in organising events or just being there to support our students, the contribution of parents active in our school cannot be underestimated.
“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” Henry Ford
Coupled with these opportunities to achieve in all aspects of school life, are the critical curriculum events that occur on a daily basis. Students have been completing assessment through exams and assignments over the last few weeks and we look forward to the positive outcomes of their hard work.
This term I have been talking to students about one of our key expectations – Respect. Each parade and lesson I have been a part of, I have asked students to be mindful of what they say and do and to show respect in their dealings with all. While we have had to work with a number of our students to remind them of our expectations and reinforce the importance of respect, the vast majority of our students show respect in their actions every single day. Being respectful doesn’t require talent or ability and can be demonstrated by every person in the school. Being respectful isn’t difficult – a simple smile and hello to others as you pass by on your way to class; a polite ‘thank you’ in return for a good deed; a kind word to someone who sits alone; silence as someone addresses the class. These are simple acts of respect – they require no talent or special gift – and can be shown by each and every person. All it takes is a fraction of a second to stop and think. In the hectic pace of our day-to-day, it is important to take the time to be aware of what is around you – to be aware of the other people with whom you interact. This again is part of showing respect.
On Friday 30th August, I had the privilege of opening our new multi-purpose courts, on which netball, basketball and volleyball were enjoyed by those who attended. The courts are an excellent new addition to the learning landscape and I know that many students have had the opportunity to use the courts during their lessons and lunch breaks. See the attached video in relation to the opening.
